With KwaZulu-Natal's (KZN) growing population, the KZN Department of Health identified a need for a hospital to service the greater population of Durban North. Hence the implementation of the 2.3 billion project of building Dr. Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital (DPKISMH), which goes as far back as 2003 when land and additional bulk was procured. In 2010, earthworks were completed and in 2012, piling, foundations and drainage were complete. The beginning of construction of the hospital building was in 2015 with the anticipation of completion in 2020, however the COVID-19 pandemic kicked in leading to unexpected delays in the completion of the hospital.
